Position Summary:

Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Met Council’s ten different departments are staffed by experts who helped over 305,000 clients in 2021 and continuously advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our holistic programs range from 100% affordable housing at 20 locations to our award-winning family violence program to comprehensive Holocaust survivor assistance to senior programming to crisis intervention to the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, 20 affordable housing sites, and 15 JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.

In 2021, Met Council opened the Boro Park Chesed Center, a welcoming environment for delivering a wide array of social services, emergency food assistance, and workforce development programs in one centralized location convenient to the Jewish communities in Brooklyn with high demand for these services. In early 2024 we will move from this pilot location to the Upward New York Brooklyn Hub, also in Boro Park, which will significantly increase our physical capacity to scale services.

The Administrative Assistant will support the logistical and programmatic needs of transitioning from the Chesed Center to the Hub. This includes supporting the recently launched Workforce Development programming at the Chesed Center. The work will be accomplished in collaboration with the Managing Director of Social Services, the Executive Director of the Chesed Center, and the Workforce Program Developer, in addition to current program staff & participants, Brooklyn community members, and funders.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate preparation of funding applications, proposals, and reports as assigned. Track deadlines as appropriate.
  • Work internally with Met Council staff on data collection and evaluation, in order to meet funder deadlines and objectives.
  • Prepare internal documentation for job postings, Human Resources paperwork, onboarding materials, etc. as the Chesed Center team expands in preparation for The Hub’s opening.
  • Organize and coordinate functions and events.
  • Support the production of external written materials, such as press releases, reports, and flyers, including proofreading & light editing.
  • Some office management tasks (e.g. placing office supply orders) required, as assigned.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and notes where appropriate.
  • Track and report on progress of tasks to supervisor as needed.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Skill and Education:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • 2+ years work experience in administrative or office work required.
  • Good communication skills are necessary; must be fluent in English (both written and oral).
  • Familiarity with Boro Park community preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Required Constantly: Walking, sitting, grasping, bending, stooping, squatting, computer input, finger dexterity and coordination of hand, eye and foot.
  • Required Frequently: Standing and climbing stairs; carrying laptop & files (approx. 8-10 lbs).
  • Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting 5-25 pounds, pushing and pulling.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to travel on public transportation to offices and meetings as determined by Met Council administration and grants.

Compensation: $20.00 - $25.00 per hour
